Workers in 7 EU countries worse off today than 8 years ago

Workers are still not feeling economic recovery: wages are lower now than they were eight years ago in seven EU member states (Greece, Croatia, Hungary, Portugal, Cyprus, UK and Italy). That is one of the findings in the Benchmarking Working Europe 2017 report, published by the European Trade Union Institute (ETUI) and European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC).

UNI DGS Christy Hoffman: “We must seize the opportunity to create decent jobs in the future world of work”

At the recent meeting of UNI Japanese Liaison Council, UNI Deputy General Secretary Christy Hoffman set out the challenges and opportunities of the Future World of Work and confirmed that this issue will continue to be one of UNI’s top priorities. 
 
"Today, many workers across the service sectors are facing the sweeping changes of the 4th Industrial revolution,” said Hoffman. “As the organization that represents over 20 million service sector workers around the world, we must provide leadership and expertise on how to tackle these challenges.”

Breakthrough in Bangladesh as unionists and garment workers are freed following international pressure

The 35 Bangladeshi unionists and garment workers arrested since December last year have been released. This follows an international campaign against the Bangladesh government’s crackdown on the labour movement, led by UNI Global Union and IndustriALL Global Union.

Teleperformance attempts to silence employees working for AT&T in the Dominican Republic

Teleperformance is attempting to crush workers who speak out against human rights and labour violations in the Dominican Republic. 

Teleperformance is attacking the right to free speech by taking court action to fire union Secretary of Organization Oliver Benson, who works on its AT&T account, who criticized its business model by writing the following on social media:

Six Journalists arrested for `incitement to mutiny`- jailed and now released in Cote D `Ivoire

UNI Global affiliate SYNAPPCI in Cote D`Ivoire has successfully taken part in lobbying and protests to secure the release of six Journailists arrested by Police. They are facing charges of ìncitement to mutiny, riot and spreading `false information`regarding a protest over pay by members of the Armed Forces. Soldiers of the army staged protests in the streets of main cities, firing shots into the air and `kidnapping `the Minister of Defence from his home. The mutiny took place over a three day period and was widely reported around the world.
