U.S. workers are under attack, says new U.N. report

A recent U.N. report exposes the serious structural weaknesses in U.S. labour law that prevent workers in the United States from exercising their most basic human and workplace freedoms.

During a mission to the United States in 2016, Maina Kiai, former U.N. special rapporteur on the rights to freedom of peaceful assembly and of association, documented the obstacles that working people confront when they exercise their freedom to form a union.

Bangladesh Accord making history in the supply chain

4 years on from the Rana Plaza tragedy, the Bangladesh Accord on Fire and safety is saving lives and changing the rules of the game in the global supply chain. At the UNI Commerce Conference, a high-level panel featuring unions, brands and NGOs talked  about the successes of the Accord and plans for the future.

Amazon and Zalando workers inspire through organizing

Worker activists with German union Ver.di gave personal testimonies regarding the importance of union organizing at online retailers at the UNI Global Commerce Conference in Berlin.

Thomas Rogil, an Amazon warehouse worker, helped lead the very first strike against the commerce giant in 2013. He told the UNI crowd that organizing was not easy, but in the face of employer opposition, the union has gained the support of Amazon workers in his facility and throughout Germany.

E-Commerce and Digitalization: New Frontiers for the Global Labour Movement

The growth of e-commerce and the digitalization of retail provide new opportunities for solidarity within the global labor movement. The discussion at the UNI Commerce Global Conference focused on unions’ responses to changes in how we work and shop.

Researcher Harvey McKeon from Peterloo Research described a digital landscape in which the largest online companies have only gotten larger—both in market capitalization and in employment footprint—while traditional brick-and-mortar enterprises are shrinking in many markets.
