Corbyn backs Public Post at massive CWU rally

The Communication Workers Union organized a massive rally yesterday in Manchester as part of their People's Post campaign. The rally, which drew more than 1,000 participants inside Manchester Cathedral and thousands more outside, coincided with a massive protest movement of activists gate crashing the nearby Conservative Party Conference. Speaking at the People's Post rally, Jeremy Corbyn, the newly-elected leader of the Labour Party, said his party remains committed to public ownership and public control of the Royal Mail, which was privatized in late 2013.

Prosegur strike enters third week in Lyon

French Prosegur workers in Lyon have been on strike since the 10th of September after the management of the Spanish multinational decided to withdraw a “risk bonus” that was in place due to the dangerous nature of a security guard’s work. The risk bonus was included in paid holiday leave, but management say they miscalculated and withdrew the bonus.

The strike entered its 21st day, and the tense situation is set to be tested further by Prosegur contesting the legality of the strike with the matter going to a tribunal. The tribunal is yet to make a decision.

German retailer faces Real problems as thousands take to the streets to protest wage policy

Several thousand workers took to the street this week to protest a move by struggling German retailer Real to exit a collective bargaining agreement negotiated by UNI affiliate ver.di. Real is a subsidiary of Metro group, one of the biggest retail companies in the world.

Walmart Global Union Alliance Meeting in Bogota

The Walmart Global Union Alliance held a meeting on September 21 and 22, attended by representatives of UNI commerce sector affiliates from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, the United States, and South Africa.

Given the strong rumors about Walmart’s arrival in the Colombian market, the meeting took place in Bogota, Colombia. The Colombian unions had the opportunity to learn strategies to successfully deal with the company from Walmart unions.

Carrefour and UNI Global Union bolster their international partnership

The Carrefour group – represented by its CEO Georges Plassat – and trade union Federation UNI Global Union – represented by its General Secretary Philip Jennings – have signed an international agreement to promote Social dialogue and Diversity and to ensure the protection of Fundamental Principles and Rights in the workplace. The agreement was signed in the presence of Guy Ryder, Director-General of the International Labour Organisation (ILO).
