Argentinian trade union stalwart, Ruben Cortina, elected President of UNI Global Union
At the UNI World Congress in Liverpool, Ruben Cortina was unanimously elected as the President of UNI Global Union.
Despite a challenging upbringing, Cortina rose through the Argentinian trade union ranks to become the Regional President of UNI Americas in 2003 and was instrumental in developing successful trade union organising across Latin America.
Nobel Prize winner Abassi issues call for global solidarity to UNI World Congress
Houcine Abassi, former secretary general of the Union Generale des Travailleurs Tunisiens (UGTT), brought a message of hope and solidarity to the UNI World Congress in Liverpool. Houcine Abassi’s tireless work as part of the National Dialogue Quartet helped save Tunisia from civil war.
In October 2015, the Tunisian National Dialogue Quartet - which comprised members of the UGTT, the Tunisian Confederation of Industry, Trade and Handicrafts, the Tunisian Human Rights League and the Tunisian Order of Lawyers - won the Nobel Peace Prize.
Hillsborough campaign’s warrior women receive Freedom from Fear Award
At the UNI World Congress in Liverpool, activists who campaigned for justice following the 1989 Hillsborough Disaster, were presented with the Freedom from Fear Award.
Represented by Gillian Edwards and Sheila Coleman, there was a standing ovation to recognise the unwavering support of the Hillsborough Family Support Group, Hillsborough Justice Campaign and, posthumously, the late Anne Williams to win justice for the victims, their families and survivors of the disaster.
Basketball and anti-racism pioneer Bilqis Abdul-Qaadir receives Freedom from Fear Award
At the UNI World Congress in Liverpool, Bilqis Abdul-Qaadir, an American professional basketball player, received a Freedom from Fear Award for her long campaign to allow women to wear hijabs. After a three year ban from playing, Abdul-Qaadir succeeded in overturning the International Basketball Federation’s widely condemned ban on wearing a hijab during games.
