LIVERPOOL, 20 June 2018—Former Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff warned the World Congress of UNI Global Union, a federation of more than 20 million service workers from 150 countries, of the worldwide attack on democracy exemplified by the unjust imprisonment of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Guy Ryder urges trade unions to mobilise to shape the future world of work

In the session on the Future World of Work at the UNI World Congress, Director General of the International Labour Organisation Guy Ryder told trade union delegates that they were fundamental in tackling the issues arising from digitalization and artificial intelligence. The world is undergoing an intense period of transformative revolution, with the world of work changing at a hitherto unprecedented pace.

Sharan Burrow at UNI World Congress: “We will fight and we will win!”

At the UNI World Congress in Liverpool, Sharan Burrow, General Secretary of the International Trade Union Confederation welcomed in a new era for UNI Global Union after the election of Christy Hoffman as General Secretary. Burrow also paid tribute to the legacy of outgoing General Secretary Philip Jennings.

“UNI is definitely making it happen,” said Burrow. “Christy is a great choice as General Secretary. She has organising in her veins – a great strategist and a great fighter. Christy is a sister, a friend ,and we will stand alongside her 100 %.”

Reverend Dr. William Barber honoured with place on Black Achievers Wall by International Slavery Museum

After a barnstorming address to almost 2000 trade union delegates at the UNI World Congress in Liverpool, Dr Reverend Barber was honoured with a place on the International Slavery Museum’s Black Achievers Wall.

Barber was joined by two British trade unionists, Bernie Grant MP and Gloria Mills, on the Black Achievers Wall in a testament to their courage and struggle for racial and economic justice.
