![]() “UNI Global Union is a highly relevant organization to the society and to its affiliates because of the rapid growth in services sector employment. Today, there are more people employed in services than in agriculture. So, when UNI embarks on its organizing campaigns, the potential for us to grow is tremendous and hence organizing services sector employees is paramount.” said Bro. Philip Jennings, General Secretary of UNI Global Union at the 11th UNI Apro Executive Committee Meeting, 29-30 March 2009, Singapore. He also reiterated that the trade union movement have to call on their respective governments to work with trade unions in order to find a collective solution to the global financial crisis. During this meeting, he also had the opportunity to share with union leaders the changes that are underway within the UNI Global Union in particular on how the organization can strengthen the operations of UNI’s three pillars: ‘Global – Region – Sector’ framework. “The work plans in the sectors must include the involvement of the regions. This is a participatory approach because if the region does not know the plan, it will not work. The process needs to include integrated thinking and action at all levels.” President of UNI Apro, Bro. Joseph De Bruyn, expressed his deep appreciation from Australia for all the messages that has been sent from all over the world regarding the bush fires in Victoria. He thanked UNI Global Union and UNI LCJ, for having made donations and contribution to the relief effort in Australia. Another key issue raised at this meeting was the preparations for UNI Congress at Nagasaki 2010. Bro. Takaaki Sakurada and the UNI Liaison Council of Japan are fully committed to make next year’s UNI Congress a huge success, “Let’s leave a strong footprint of UNI Global Union in Nagasaki 2010!” As the region is the host for the World Congress next year, UNI Apro Regional Secretary, Bro. Christopher Ng, is committed to bringing a strong regional delegation to Nagasaki, in particular women and young workers. He was pleased to announce that both the UNI Global Women’s Conference and the UNI Apro Youth Conference will be held at Nagasaki for this purpose. |
