Once again, the world has been shaken by terrorist acts over the weekend.  

UNI Global Union expresses its deep condolences to the family of Heather Heyer, who was murdered in an act of domestic terrorism in Virginia when a white supremacist drove his car into a crowd of counter-protestors.   She was a young woman who stood up against racial injustice and will be remembered for her commitment and values. As she last posted on her Facebook page, “if you are not outraged, then you are not paying attention”.  The ugly face of the armed and militaristic white supremacists and neo-Nazis, who marched in the small town of Charlottesville without shame, is a reminder of a past which we must never forget. There is no place in civilized society for hate and racism.  

UNI Global Union General Secretary Philip Jennings said, “We stand in solidarity with our sister unions in the United States and call for an America free from fear of racial hatred and division. Equally we condemn the terrorist atrocity in Burkina Faso which has claimed the lives of 16 people and send a strong message of solidarity to our unions there.”

UNI Africa’s Regional Secretary Keith Jacobs added, “Our sympathies are with the victims and the families of this barbarous attack in the Burkina Faso capital, Ouagadougou. We are united in grief with our brothers and sisters in our Burkina Faso unions as we are with those in Charlottesville. The trade union movement is built on human rights and democracy - we will not bow to terrorism wherever it seeks to destroy lives and disfigure our communities.”
