Technology and consulting giant Accenture is leaving the Bangladeshi market and will lay off all 556 employees in Dhaka. Accenture Bangladesh employees were informed on 18 July that their last working day will be 30 November 2017, after which the company seizes operations.

Represented by the Accenture Employees Union, Bangladesh (AEUB), the employees stopped working after the announcement was made. The company has since commenced negotiations with AEUB, which is also the first registered trade union in the Bangladeshi ICT sector.

UNI ICTS stands in solidarity with AEUB and the employees of Accenture Bangladesh as they go through these difficult times, and calls upon the company to engage with the union in a constructive manner to safeguard the well-being of the employees.

Accenture Bangladesh was formed in 2013 when Accenture acquired 51% of the shares in Grameenphone’s IT subsidiary GPIT. Since then it has mainly served Grameenphone, which is the largest mobile operator in the country and majority-owned by Norwegian multinational Telenor.
