UNI Management Committee gives its full backing to UNI DGS Christy Hoffman to become General Secretary
“I am pleased to announce that the UNI Global Union Management Committee has unanimously endorsed the recommendation of the interview panel which met on 10th May, that UNI Deputy General Secretary Christy Hoffman should be elected as the new UNI General Secretary. She is the right candidate for UNI’s future, ” said Ann Selin, UNI’s President.
The Management Committee’s recommendation will be considered by the UNI World Executive Board in October before being put to the vote at the UNI World Congress in Liverpool in June 2018, when the current UNI General Secretary Philip Jennings steps down.
Jennings said, “I am delighted that the UNI Management Committee has given its support to Christy and and I will be proud to hand over the baton to her in Liverpool. Christy has been the backbone of Breaking Through over the past 7 years and has a proven record of winning for working people. Her many years of experience in both the US labour movement and at UNI will serve us well. She will be a brilliant leader.”
Hoffman said, “ I would be thrilled to take up this challenge and to build upon the legacy of Philip’s inspiring and visionary leadership. UNI Global Union is stronger now than ever before. My ambition that UNI will continue to develop as a global union which is ready to face the future with spirit, solidarity and power.”
Christy Hoffman began her trade union work on the shop floor of a jet engine factory where she grew to become a leader in the Machinists union. She later represented the Mineworkers, Teamsters and SEIU in the US. She has had many accomplishments in her trade union career, including most recently the negotiation of the Bangladesh Accord.
