Proud to be a feminist. Proud of my union.
On January 21st 2017, over 500,000 women in Washington and 5 million more around the world marched in a worldwide protest to advocate for legislation and policies regarding women’s rights, immigration, healthcare, environment, racial equality, freedom of religion and worker’s rights.
The rallies were aimed at President Donald Trump as a response to his statements and positions regarding women; and their turnout made them the largest single-day demonstration in the history of the U.S.
Just one day before, at the World Economic Forum in Davos, UNI Global Union General Secretary Philip Jennings took on the stage with a similar and very powerful message: “we must all become feminists”, encouraging both men and women to fight together for equality.
At the workplace, women represent 50% of the workforce, but they are still underrepresented in leadership roles, they suffer from gender based discrimination and violence, as well as unequal pay; but as unionists fighting for social justice and equality, we can help bring forth change in favor of millions of women workers around the world.
So for this International Women’s Day (8th of March), we will commemorate the struggle of women to gain equal footing in society through our UNI Equal Opportunities campaign: PROUD TO BE A FEMINIST, PROUD OF MY UNION.
Join us and join the millions of other women and men who will be taking part in different marches and manifestations, from celebrations in parks to dressing in certain colors, to carrying out strikes. Because if you believe that all human beings are equal, you are a feminist too.
