Ruben Cortina received the full backing of the UNI Americas conference as he was re-elected as UNI Americas Regional President.

Union leaders speaking in support of his re-election said Ruben was not only a cornerstone of the organisation but praised him for his contribution to changing its culture.

UNI General Secretary Philip Jennings spoke of his deep respect for what Ruben together with Adriana Rosenzvaig had achieved in the region.

In his acceptance speech, Ruben said that Latin America faces real challenges in the changing world of work, not least from the economic power of China.

Ruben said, “Our future lies in uniting Latin America, our future lies in integration, not forgetting our friends in North Americas who are our partners in this New World of Work.

"Our principles do not change, we will keep our flags that call for decent work, collective bargaining and strong unions. We must protect these ideals in the New World of Work because we know that it will not absorb the next generation of workers.

"Finally we must break down barriers – UNI is already doing that –  because Latin America wants to be part of  the global debate, we have the tools to succeed in this transitional period. We have to be part of the Future World of Work to win.”
