Forward together!: UNI Americas organized a union in G4S Colombia
It is with great enthusiasm that we celebrate and share our joy for the establishment of UNTRAG4S, the G4S Workers' Union, on the 27th of August in Colombia.
Despite difficulties with work shifts and the resistance of some supervisors, but with our confidence and the protection given by the Global Framework Agreement between UNI and G4S, men and women workers were able to take this first step forward to make their voices heard and respected by the British multinational in that country.
Global Framework Agreements, such as the UNI and G4S Agreement, are an important indicator about the genuine commitment by a transnational company to honour the legal right of workers to freedom of association and collective bargaining. Union organising does not happen without the courage and commitment of workers dedicated to improving their lives. UNI applauds these workers and we commit to standing with you, and working with G4S, to move to the next stage of building a strong private security union in Colombia.” said Alice Dale, UNI Property Services Head of Department.
Marvin Largaespada, Regional Director of UNI Americas Property Services, said this achievement was an important step in the defence of labour and union rights of its workers.
"We've had ongoing dialogue for almost two years and we reached agreements with the company, along with the task of organising in G4S Colombia. Today we see the agreement materialized by the creation of UNTRAG4S, born with representation in Cali, Barranquilla and Bogota. We are convinced that we will continue to grow in other cities where the company operates" he said.
"We highlight that this is happening at a very important time for the country, which is the signing of the peace accord that most Colombians yearn. That is why we call for strengthening this workers' union to defend and ensure their rights and benefits" stated the Regional Director.
Also, Manuel Villa, who is only 23 years old, was elected president to undertake this path of strengthening and fighting for dignity and decent work at a time when the country dreams of a renewed Colombia with no more conflicts.
We congratulate UNI Americas Property Services for the progress achieved in organising G4S in Colombia, and the Organising Committee for their conviction and desire to continue working for the well-being and collective rights of all the workers.
