Hundreds of contract cleaners at the Prince of Wales Hospital in Hong Kong have ended a strike after winning a pay rise and better conditions from their employer.

The mostly female cleaners began the action last Monday, because they were unhappy that those employed after them were paid more and had better conditions. 

But after several rounds of talks with the contract cleaning company – in which the hospital's management also took part –  Union leaders and cleaners negotiated to standardise the basic salary at HK$9,000. The company also agreed to pay most cleaners a “hardship allowance” of HK$300 a month for handling unpleasant jobs. 

The employer has also agreed not to retaliate on cleaners who have taken part in the strike.
