Uruguayan President, Tabare Vazquez, announced that Uruguay withdraws from the Trade in Services Agreement (TISA) negotiations.

On several occasions, the Uruguayan trade union movement expressed its concern and rejection to Uruguay's participation in the Tisa, as it is a tool used by multinationals that threatens national sovereignty.

This was evident at the PIT-CNT workers' confederation general strike of August 6, where one of the rallying cries was "no to the Tisa" which, with its ambiguous proposals, benefits multinationals  at the expense of developing and poor countries.

This free trade agreement, promoted by the United States and the European Union, eliminates all barriers for companies and promotes a neoliberal agenda of the countries involved in the negotiation.

The agreement affects all service sectors, government procurement, telecommunications, logistics, transport and financial services. It also proposes clauses which, if at any given time a service is privatized, it cannot later be nationalized, thus threatening all state public services that directly affect the quality of life of all citizens.

UNI Americas supports the Uruguayan government's decision to defend the sovereignty of the people and rejects this type of agreement at the service of capital that directly affects all workers.
