UNI Global Union expressed shock and horror after a private security guard was murdered at his place of work last week. On Friday afternoon in New York at the 201 Varick Street federal building, a New Jersey man fatally opened fire on private security guard Idrissa Camara. Camara worked as a private protective officer for FJC security Services and was a member of UNI affiliate SEIU. He had volunteered to stay late, even though he was supposed leave work at 4 pm, over an hour before the shooting.

Head of UNI Property Services Alice Dale said, “After this tragic turn of events, we must remember Idrissa, who was a true leader and unionist, who recently helped organise his worksite. Security guards across the world are often on the front line in order to keep the public safe and secure, and it is a tragedy that Idrissa Camara lost his life for it.”

The death of Idrissa Camara in New York echoed similar events in Chile last month, when a Prosegur security guard, Rafael Pardo Trivino, was killed on the job in July.

Along with affiliates, UNI is working to produce a report on the deaths of security workers such as Trivino and Camara, in order to provide safer worldwide solutions to a very dangerous industry for workers.
