On the third anniversary of the mass dismissal of 327 unionized employees by Prosegur Paraguay, workers protested in front of the local head offices of Spanish bank BBVA and Prosegur in Asuncion. BBVA is one of the principal clients for Prosegur in Latin America.

On the 30th of July 2012, Prosegur dismissed 327 cash in transit workers after a legal strike motivated by inhumane working conditions. After the intervention of the then Minister of Labour, who promised to mediate in the dispute, workers from the SITEPROPASA union voted to end their eight day strike and return to the negotiation table. When employees arrived at work they were met by lawyers who incorrectly advised that the strike was illegal and if workers did not resign immediately from the company they would be fired.

The fired workers undertook work for Spanish bank BBVA, who has never made any comment on Prosegur’s human rights abuses in Paraguay or other Latin American countries.

Workers signs denounced the Prosegur Paraguay Country Manager who has retained his position, despite the dismissal of more than 300 workers for exercising their right to strike.

Dismissed workers from the cities of Ciudad del Este and Asunción participated in the protest action.
