UNICARE private sector care and social insurance affiliates from around the world will meet in Buenos Aires, Argentina on May 20 & 21 to build a global programme of work, share lessons and strategies for organising in the UNICARE sector worldwide, and network with unions which have similar challenges and opportunities.
UNICARE, UNI Global Union's private care and social insurance sector, includes: private in home care, nursing homes, disability support work, early childhood education and care work, private health, hospitals, laboratories, private and community mental health and social work, ambulatory services, and the private administration of all social services and social insurance.
UNICARE areas of work are growing globally at an incredible rate. The increase in aging populations, increases in those requiring support due to disability, and the financial demands on working families requiring both parents to be employed outside the home, along with governments looking to the private sector to play an increasingly important role, are making care and social insurance critical sectors of the economy. All of these developments contribute to new markets and new workplaces in these areas of work.
UNICARE unions worldwide are gathering to examine the challenges and opportunities this future world of work brings, and sharing our best practices and best ideas to build workers' power. The meeting will draw on the knowledge of other UNI sectors where we have seen a growing private sector presence through sub-contracting and outsourcing of work, resulting in the growth of a low wage, over worked, and increasingly precarious workforce.
UNI encourages all affiliates with membership in the UNICARE sector to join us for this important meeting. To register, click here, or for more information, please email kirsty.mccully@uniglobalunion.org
