Deutsche Telekom CEE Union Alliance: raising standards for workers
On 30-31 October 2014 took place in Bucharest the Deutsche Telekom CEE Union Alliance annual meeting, organized by UNI Global Union, Friedrich Ebert Stiftung, AFL-CIO Solidarity Centre and FSCOM.
A dozen unions from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Montenegro, Romania, Serbia, Switzerland and United States participated in the event together with UNI Global Union.
This meeting aimed at presenting national reports about the workers’ rights compliance by the DT operations in Central and Eastern Europe countries and planning the global cooperation actions among Deutsche Telekom subsidiaries trade unions in the next period.
Participants noted the many problems faced by Telekom workers including outsourcing, the use of cheap labour such as students and part-time workers, austerity measures and reductions in incomes, as well as the violations of workers’ rights and international labour standards.
Participants agreed that the priority is to achieve the same workers’ standards during the reorganization process of building ONE DT, outside and inside Germany as well. We hope that constructive communication with DT CEOs at local, regional and global levels will give some progress.
The restructuring and outsourcing processes must be central elements in the mentioned dialogue. Equally important issues for our unions are the limitations to the freedom of association and collective bargaining strengthening.
If Telekom management will not address these problems seriously the trade unions of the Alliance are committed to organising protests and joint actions. Our voice will be heard through letters, petitions and demonstrations.
We also call upon the European Commission to ensure that the interests of workers are recognised and the protection of jobs and working conditions in changes taking place in European telecom regulations.
Solidarity is the key! Unity is the strength!
