A recent article in the New York Times spells out how workers lives are improved by unions.

The article “Some Retail Workers Find Better Deals With Unions”, by Rachel L. Swarns, focuses on a worker at the Macy’s Store in Herald Square in New York which is unionized. Unlike assistants in non-unionised stores Debra Ryan has fixed hours and can provide for her family.

The article compares Debra’s stable situation with a worker at the nearby non-unionised Zara store, Sonica Smith, who has variable hours and does not know from week to week if she can pay her rent or provide for her two young children.

UNI Global Union’s Head of Commerce, Alke Boessiger said, “The article underlines that workers’ rights can only be properly protected through unions. The story of Debra and Sonica makes that clear in black and white. We will continue to fight for the right to organise in the commerce sector. We and our affiliates, including the UFCW in the United States, will not stop until Debra’s story becomes the norm and workers like Sonica are lifted up.”
