We share the letter sent by our Regional Secretary, Adriana Rosenzvaig and our Regional Director André Rodrigues to the Governor of Tucuman, Mr. José Alperovich.
UNI Americas representing 4 million workers in the region, and UNI Global Union representing over 20 million workers in more than 900 unions in 150 countries worldwide, felt indignation with the events that occurred yesterday, 13th of May, in the Province of Tucuman by infantry police against workers from Caja de Ahorros Popular de Tucumán and union members of La Bancaria, legitimately protesting for their legal and labour rights which are part of any democratic system.
Yesterday, workers and union members were brutally and strongly repressed by the use of excessive police force when they were simply exercising their right to protest.
Through this letter we express that we strongly condemn all forms of violence, especially against workers fighting for their rights.
Furthermore, what the workers and La Bancaria are requesting is simply the reinstatement of 36 dismissed workers from Caja de Ahorros Popular de Tucumán, according to the decision of the Ministry of Labour of Argentina.
UNI Americas considers that the best way is always through negotiation and respect for laws and human rights, and that a modern and democratic society does not share violent and disproportionate force against defenceless workers.
We hope that serenity and balance prevail within the Government of the Province of Tucuman, that it sits at the negotiating table, respects union rights, and complies with the decisions of federal agencies.
We hope that democracy will prevail over violence and intolerance.
Sincerely,
Andre Rodrigues Adriana Rosenzvaig
Regional Director Regional Secretary
