UNI SLAC Women’s Committee organized a Health Camp to mark the International Women’s Day (IWD) in Jaffna, Sri Lanka on 9th March 2014.
The Health Camp was organized to help women who suffered hardships during the three-decade long civil war in Sri Lanka, targeting in particular the women who live in internally-displaced camps in and around Jaffna.
The Health Camp provided services such as basic health checkups, and medical advice to women to seek professional treatment and medical care. Members of the Health Services Trade Union Alliance [HSTUA] volunteered to assist and provide these medical services at the Health Camp.
Women and men from UNI SLAC travelled from Colombo carrying with them medical supplies, spectacle frames and lenses for the needy women. Over 100 women visited the Health Camp to seek medical advice and treatment.
“The Health Camp which marked International Women’s Day this year in Jaffna was a great success. We are happy that we were able to help the women who visited the Health Camp and its success showcased the teamwork and strength of UNI SLAC Women,” said Lankika Ariyasinghe Secretary of UNI Sri Lanka Affiliates Council Women’s Committee. “We are also very appreciative of all the help and hospitality extended to us by the brothers and sisters in Jaffna.”
UNI SLAC President Gayan Munaweera thanked Bank of Ceylon and Sri Lanka Telecom for their generous support and cooperation in organizing the Health Camp. UNI SLAC Women’s Committee expressed their appreciation for the support and encouragement extended to them from all unions and especially to the Northern Central Hospital and Indian Bank Jaffna for providing meals for the Health Camp volunteers.
