The UNI SLAC Youth has elected its new committee led by President Janath Prasanka from FBSOL and Secretary Norika Warnasuriya from NPTWU at its re-launch meeting held on 15 January 2014 at Colombo, Sri Lanka.

The meeting was attended by youth representatives, between 18 – 35 years of age, nominated from UNI’s nine affiliates in Sri Lanka. The meeting drew participation from women unionists, maintaining a good gender balance.

The new youth committee plans to organize the retail industry, targeting young workers employed in shopping complexes mushrooming in Sri Lanka and to help them to form a union.

The meeting was attended by UNI SLAC President Gayan Muaweera, UNI SLAC Women’s Committee President Chandrika Eladaththa, UNI SLAC Women’s Committee Secretary Lankika Ariyasinghe, and UNI Apro Director of Finance Jayasri Priyalal.

After a round of introductions, the meeting presented a report on the youth committee’s activities held from 2011 to 2013 followed by a presentation on group dynamics and team work to motivate the committee towards its new goals.

Among the diverse activities organised last year, the UNI SLAC Youth Committee held the UNIon for UNIty Awareness Program where they carried out a series of awareness campaigns ultilising the NgN manual to attract young workers into joining unions. The Youth Committee is also involved in activities held by the UNI SLAC Women’s Committee and UNI SLAC.
