UNI affiliate the Union of Private Security Personnel (UPSP) has recruited 1,003 new members in its first week of an organising campaign. Funded by the Finnish solidarity center, SASK, and managed by UNI Property Services, the campaign seeks to organise the majority of the Security Workers in the industry.

Activists were identified, trained and formed into teams who then worked previously selected 'zones' in Accra, the capital city.

A small group of Organisers from outside Ghana also came to assist during this week of action. They came from the Danish union, VSL, the Finnish Union, PAM, the Namibian union, NATAU, and the British union, Unite.

All 1,003 workers identified issues and problems that affect them at their jobs. A network of new and current activists will now be built to improve conditions in the industry.

This success comes at a time when the General Secretary of UPSP is still facing a court battle against a security employer opposing union organising - which the Employment Minister has undertaken to end.
