UNI Global Union is the global trade union for the commerce sector, representing 20 million workers worldwide. UNI's affiliate unions represent Walmart workers the world over. In reaction to the appointment of Doug McMillion as Walmart CEO, UNI Global Union General Secretary Philip Jennings said:

“The appointment of Doug McMillon as CEO presents Walmart with an opportunity to choose a new direction at a time of growing unrest against its business model in the United States.

“Whilst Walmart has undoubtedly had labour issues in many countries around the world, nevertheless the company has shown more flexibility in its global operations than it has in the United States and Canada. For instance Walmart has a partnership agreement with a trade union in the UK and has negotiated collective bargaining agreements in Latin America and Asia. As head of the company’s international division, Mr McMillon would have been part of the decision making chain that endorsed these developments.

“With the company facing another uncertain holiday season as communities and workers protest its low wages, we ask Doug McMillon whether he is willing to afford the same rights to American Walmart workers as Walmart has in other countries.

“We believe that a wholesale change in approach to labour issues would benefit not only Walmart's hardworking employees, but the company and its shareholders too. It’s time to turn the page.”
