WORKERS in Group 4 Securicor (G4S), Ghana have won union recognition after a protracted struggle.

The Union of Private Security Personnel (UPSP), a potential affiliate of UNI, signed a recognition agreement with G4S on November 23.

Union General Secretary Ebenezer Mensah says G4S has expressed readiness to commence negotiations for a collective agreement and has asked the union to submit proposals by early 2008.

He says the next task for the union would be to start negotiations for a better deal.

G4S is the largest private security company in Africa, with operations in 18 countries. But the company has recognised unions only in a handful of countries such as Malawi, South Africa, Uganda and Zambia.

UNI is actively campaigning for union recognition in G4S to improve the welfare of employees in this multinational company, who are generally not paid a decent wage.
