Comparison between different “ flexicurity” models and the role of social dialogue were the two main topics of the UNI-Europa conference on Flexicurity, which was organized on 21&22 February 2008 in Copenhagen. More than 70 trades unionists and European employers representatives had the opportunity to hear presentations of various national experiences and to debate the approaches developed at sectoral level to implement the flexicurity strategy as defined by the common principles adopted at European level.



UNI-Europa participants pointed out to the employers representatives that income security and a high-level of social protection are preconditions to successful negotiations on flexicurity and that negotiated solutions can only exist if there is a strong and reliable system to secure income and social protection. They insisted on the financial implication of flexicurity as well as on the essential role that the social dialogue plays in the implementation of the flexicurity principles.



Bernadette Ségol, UNI-Europa regional secretary declared that ”in order to counter current downwards competitive trends, it is necessary for trade unions to act together, with concrete demands and action both a European and National level. Without such a coordinated action, the European social model will be weakened down”.



At the end of the two-day conference professor Klaus Busch developed the concept of the “corridor model” which could be one of the key element of a European Social Contract that UNI-Europa would like to push forward. This EU social contract would include European social rules and framework legislation, commitment to the social dialogue and obligations on social protection.
