THE UNI Shoprite Steering Group adopted an action plan and work programme at its first meeting held 17 – 18 April in Lusaka, Zambia. The meeting was supported by the Frederich Ebert Foundation (FES).

Among the priority issues in the action plan are:

• Setting a regional union alliance in Shoprite

• Supporting organising

• Supporting collective bargaining

• Developing an information resource base (database)

• New challenges such as achieving a global agreement.

• Building communication networks

The Steering Group is the coordinating body of the UNI Shoprite Union Alliance that brings together shop stewards from the Shoprite Group of companies that operates in 16 African countries.

The aim of the alliance is to achieve a global agreement with Shoprite. Shoprite is currently studying a draft global agreement that has been submitted by UNI affiliates.

The FES is supporting research work on Shoprite and will publish a popular version once the research is complete.

Outgoing UNI-Africa regional secretary Fackson Shamenda thanked the steering group for the better coordination of the Shoprite Alliance.
