According to trade union information, Spanish telecoms company Telefonica is planning to lay off around 500 workers at its mobile operations currently employing some 4,450 employees.



The union spokesperson stated company was justifying the cut with productivity and organisational reasons. He also told that Telefonica had presented initial proposals to shed around 500 jobs and had said the sales department would not be affected. However, there could be further cuts to divisions outside the mobile business.

Some time ago the daily newspaper Expansion quoted union sources as saying the operator was looking to dismiss up to 700 workers as a result of integrating its fixed line telecoms business with its mobile business which trades under the brand Movistar.

Telefonica, one of the biggest telecom companies in the world, makes around 40 % of its core profit in Spain. It is present in 24 countries and employes around 249,000 professionals.
