Regulate finance to ensure sustainable growth

Philip Bowyer, UNI Deputy General Secretary, enumerated the various initiatives taken by UNI Global Union to address the global financial crisis at the two days seminar. Ms. Sucheta Dalal, consulting editor of Moneywise Media, spoke at the seminar about the phenomenal growth, recent developments in the Indian financial markets and the banking industry. She said now there are people to listen to media and trade unions having faced the heat of the financial meltdown. A lively discussion followed her presentation. Participants to the seminar shared their experiences during the discussion with Ms.Dalal
The seminar was organized to introduce International Labour Standards and Framework Agreements amongst the union leaders in the Indian finance sector in. UNI Apro Finance organized the seminar with solidarity support from FSU Sweden/LOTCO; to promote inter-union cooperation. Theme of the seminar was on core labour standards and framework agreements with multinational companies for protection of workers rights and promotion of decent work.
Trade Union leaders representing employees in banking and insurance industry in India insisted that a social dialogue between all stake holders to discuss further on the current global financial crisis and its impact on employees. UNI affiliates and all participating unions solicited UNI finance global union’s support, guidance and solidarity to protect the interest of employees and trade unions.
Participants appreciated the efforts taken by UNI Finance Global Union to bring trade union leaders belonging to different federations united under UFBU for the seminar to highlight about the emerging trends in the global financial markets. The seminar participants acknowledged that there is need for coordinated strategies to face challenges effectively. Jayasri Priyalal, Director, UNI Apro Finance sector activities coordinated the seminar with Milind Nadkarni, President of UNI Indian Liaison Council. There were 22 participants representing six out of nine component unions of UFBU including UNI Finance affiliates at the seminar.
