Derek Simpson and Tony Woodley Joint General Secretaries |
Mr Thomas J Quinlan RR Donnelley 111 South Wacker Drive Chicago Illinois 60606 U S A 15 December 2008 |
Dear Mr Quinlan
On behalf of Unite the Union in the UK and the Republic of Ireland we strongly protest, yet another example of your company’s anti-Union bias, this time in Brazil. We understand that a worker and Union Shop Steward at the RRD plant in Santa Rita, Brazil was given a five day suspension for convening a Union meeting.
Under Brazilian Labour Law and International Labour Standards the Shop Steward, Sergio Ricardo de almeida was well within his rights to convene the meeting and has given all proper notices to management.
Nonetheless the supervisors placed pressure on the workers not to attend the meeting, with the explicit objective of weakening the Union at the plant.
We urge that the suspension of Sergio de Almeida be immediately rescinded and that you order an end to management’s anti-Union attitudes and actions.
We join the graphical workers worldwide united in Uni Graphical reasserting our request for a dialogue with your company at global level. We believe you should put Sergio back to work, pay him for any lost time for his unjust suspension and recognise that RRD workers must havetheir right to freedom of association respected.
Yours sincerely
Tony Burke
