According to the Australian mass media, Telstra is considering plans to cut thousands of jobs as the economy slows. The reductions may be in addition to the 12,000 job cuts already planned by 2010. The plan to cut jobs in Australia was discussed at the Board meeting in Las Vegas.



CEPU, UNI's affiliate in Australia, has published the follwing on its website:

"The fact that a Board plans to cut jobs and take incomes away from families in a tough year - because the Board signed off on a game plan recommended to it and that plan backfired - is despicable. Employees should not be treated as pawns in a broader fight that Telstra wants to pick with the government. Employees didn't come up with the idea to bluff the government. Someone higher up did - and while they get to keep their job, Telstra wants to cut employee jobs and income to compensate for a bad decision. So employees are paying for the mistakes of senior managers.

It's an awful reflection on a major company - and it's now time for senior people in the company to take responsibility for their decisions."
