Magna Carta of Women & celebration of International Women's Day

![]() This year, the Filipino women have more meaning to celebrate "International Women's Day" (8th March) because the Philippine Senate has ratified the Magna Carta of Women. The Magna Carter is a frame work of rights for marginalized women, especially rural women, farmers and home-based workers. The bill seeks to empower Women to eliminate discrimination against them in all spheres of life. It also defines discrimination against women pursuant to the "Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW).” It also espouses a policy of gender mainstreaming, declares that the rights of women are human rights. It also requires review and if necessary amendment or repeal of laws that are discriminatory to women within a specified period. The Magna Carta of Women was a result of the successful deliberations of the Senate and the House of Representatives bicameral conference committee last March 3, 2009. After languishing for more than 10 years in three congresses, The Magna Carta of Women is now a signature away from becoming Law. After the arduous struggle by Women's rights advocates, the passage of the Magna Carta of Women marks a milestone in the Philippine history. This achievement has a great impact on the Filipino Women, more meaningful and joyous in celebrating this year "International Women's Day." In celebration of the "International Women's Day, UNI-PLC Women made a schedule with the "National Kidney Institute" to donate blood for the kidney renal patients. We believe that "Our Blood," "Our Love" can save many lives and what more is the better way to celebrate the "International Women's Day," then sharing our blood with the renal kidney patients, who are very much in need of red platelets. Honestly, at first we had some fears in this blood donation because most of us were first time blood donors, but after the blood letting, we felt good, a kind of joy and fulfilment for being able to help the needed sick patients. Some PLC Women, because of health reasons, were not able to donate their blood, their fulfilment was to be besides their blood donor sisters, encouraging and giving them moral support. This is the first time, a new experience for the PLC Women to donate blood but this will not be the last. We know, we are doing a good deed in a very small way.We will be going back there after six months, with more of our sisters and share our blood and save lives. Finally, PLC Women would like to encourage our sisters from Asia-Pacific Region to try donating your blood to the needed sick patients. It does not cost you anything but even helps you to have new blood, to look more younger and more healthier and at the same time you are saving someone's life. So my dear sisters from Asia Pacific Region, I would like to say to you that "Life is Blood, Share it !" "Give Blood and Save Lives." "Happy International Women's Day!" Marlar Sabado-President
