The Swiss Post has the means to maintain an extensive postal network The Swiss Post announced this morning its results for fiscal 2008. With 825 million francs in net profit and operating income increasing, Swiss Post has an excellent financial health and economic development. It clearly has the means to maintain an extensive postal network. Considering that the years results include a year already marked by the financial crisis, with a net profit of 825 million francs and an increase in operating income, it seems incomprehensible that Swiss Post is planning to dismantle its main tool. That is what the Swiss Post. With the announcement this morning 25 March, a particularly good result for the year 2008, it is still planning to close 500 post offices in addition to offices in 1500 already removed in recent years. This new plan of dismantling the postal network, already in itself is unacceptable and economically unjustifiable, is particularly shocking in light of the financial health of the group. The lowering of the monopoly to 50 grams from 1 July next and the possible liberalization of the postal market which could in future years harm the post does not justify such a drastic reduction in the network. On the contrary, it is in this context of an economic strategy absurd and suicidal, it is for the Post Office to lose its main competitive advantage in a market that would be completely liberalized, its postal network and proximity with users. The Swiss Communications Union can only rejoice at the good health of the Post, but it denounces with even more vigour the drastic reduction in the strength of the postal network, and the plan to lower the salaries of counter staff and those responsible for small offices. The Syndicat de la Communication requires the leadership of Swiss Post to immediately renounces these measures unjustified economically and socially extremely serious. |
