A renewed World Women’s Committee
|
Twenty-three affiliated women from different unions representing all regions of the world participated in this meeting. The meeting took place in a renewed atmosphere as four out of five presidents were new in their positions as well as the Head of Department and her collaborator. Therefore, one of the items of the agenda was the discussion of a draft paper to reorganize the group and establish the responsibilities. One of the points discussed was the need for a gender balance in the Executive Committees, both at regional and world levels. Furthermore, the first UNI Women bulletin, a gender equality manual for delegates, leaflets and campaign posters were launched during the meeting so that affiliates may have access to them. There was also a presentation on how to access and surf the new website. There were two presentations by guest speakers during the meeting. The first one was given by Susan Brown (WWF), who explained the causes and consequences of climate change. The second presentation was given by Marieke Koening (ITUC), who talked about the joint project “Decisions for Life”. The group of women also bid warm farewell to Saeko Honda, a prominent and committed Japanese affiliate. As member of the organizing committee of the UNI World Congress in Nagasaki, Saeko Honda gave a presentation on the city and the ongoing preparations for the meeting in 2010. The participants agreed that the next meeting of the World Women’s Committee will be held April next year (exact date and venue to be confirmed), and that the Steering Group for Nagasaki will meet 9 November 2009 at UNI headquarters (Nyon, Switzerland). The Steering Group for the organization of UNI World Women’s Conference in November 2010 in Nagasaki met after the meeting, 30 April 2009. The group included 8 women (two from each region).
