UNI Global Union today condemned the string of bombings in Jakarta that killed nine people and wounded many others and said that has decided to postpone a regional conference planned in the city next week to ensure the safety of 400 union representatives from around the Asia & Pacific region that had planned to attend.



“We condemn this violence and our thoughts are with the victims and their families,” said UNI General Secretary Philip Jennings. “It is with great regret that we postpone our UNI Apro conference in Jakarta but we look forward to rescheduling it in the near future.”



Some 400 union representatives from around the region were to meet in Jakarta next week to discuss strategies and actions in the region to strengthen UNI’s global organising, regulatory and multi-national campaigns.



“Even though our meeting has been postponed, the work of our unions and UNI continues in the Asia & Pacific region,” Jennings said. “The global union movement stands for peaceful protest and progressive change and today we stand in solidarity with the people of Indonesia who say “No!” to violence and working for a safe and just society.”
