Today, 28 April, is International Workers’ Memorial Day.



Workplace accidents kill more than 1,000 workers every day. A further 5,300 people die every day due to work-related diseases, while more than 906,000 people suffer workplace injuries.



Trade unions and their members around the world are mobilising today to remember workers who have lost their lives or health at work and to demand stronger safety protection.



Guy Ryder, General Secretary of the ITUC says: “Unions are key for ensuring that safe and sustainable work is not a privilege for the few, but a right for every worker.”



Events are taking place in over 100 countries today, with participation by governments, the ILO professional and non-governmental organisations, and even some employers. Activities include commemorations, protests, training sessions, and the issue of new research on health and safety.
