Carrefour announces launch of 1st “Carrefour Express” in Tunisia

Since Carrefour started opearting in Tunisia in 2001 the group has steadily increased its presence to iclude not just more cities than Tunis but also more formats. Carrefour is well-know as the "hypermarket chain" but in other countries has been running smaller formats such as supermarkets, convenience and poximity stores. The introduction of "Carrefour Express" is an indication of the Group's continued trust in the North African market.
The news that Carrefour is expanding in Tunisia comes shortly after the company announced it was entering the Indian market by opening business in New Delhi. UNI Commerce welcomed this development and is confident that the constructive working relationship with Carrefour can be transferred into these important markets, where there is little to no tradition for social dialogue. Carrefour's sincere efforts to create good working conditions bodes well for this.
Last year, UNI Commerce launched a union alliance within the Carrefour Group which brings together all the affiliated unions that organise within Carrefour Group, and on 20-21 May 2010 the Alliance met for the first time. The aim of the Alliance is to strengthen the social dialogue with the company and to be a global social partner to Carrefour, which continuously evaluates the implementation of the global agreement signed by Carrefour and UNI in 2000.
As the other union alliances established by UNI, the UNI Carrefour Global Union Alliance will give the participating unions a global voice, so that issues can be addressed in a constructive manner based on good social dialogue which over the years have served both the company and its employees well.
At the alliance meeting Carrefour was represented by Global Labour Relations Director Jean-Luc Delenne and his colleague Mathilde Tabary.
As more and more of the globally important companies that UNI Commerce is working with are establishing themselves in the MENA region, UNI Commerce has taken the unusual initiative to try and build social dialogue in the region. This initiative has the support of the European Retailers organisation EuroCommerce and is expected to go ahead in the autumn in Cairo, Egypt. Several mulitnationals have already announced their support for the initiative and are believed to be participating actively.
