“Giving Green ICT a social dimension” – this was the topic of a very animated dinner debate that UNI Europa ICTS organised in the European Parliament on 9 June 2010 in cooperation with Britta Thomsen and Catherine Trautmann, Members of the European Parliament. Representatives of academia, the Norwegian and Swedish Engineering Associations, the European Trade Union Institute, the European Parliament and the Commission and the ICT industry discussed with UNI Europa about the social impact of green ICT regarding job creation, education and training. Participants underlined the importance of creating multi-stakeholder partnerships across the ICT industry with the aim of better addressing the challenge of skills shortage, training needs and ensuring a socially just transition to a new “green” economy. The event was a fruitful continuation of the UNI Europa ICT Forum in Helsingør last year and the start of an intense dialogue between UNI Europa, the European institutions and the ICT industry. UNI Europa believes that trade unions play a crucial role in raising awareness about the social challenges that so far have often been neglected in the European debate on the move towards a low carbon economy. As a “green” economy is built, UNI Europa wants to ensure it focuses on creating good jobs and protects the social rights and standards for European workers.
