Participants representing workers in casinos, lottery, betting shops from four regions of UNI met to discuss the global gaming sector situation across the world and to exchange experiences in organising and representing sector workers. The meeting agreed on the sector strategic plan and target companies for the coming years. For the coming year, UNI gaming will jointly target Genting, Sun International and Casinos Austria. Research and mapping of these companies should be done and campaigns planned in the coming months. Another task for the sector is to look into the regulations of online gambling and to raise this issue with the governments.
The participants jointly agreed on the resolution presented by Debbie Anderson from UNITE HERE in the US. The resolution supports the legitimate rights of Station Casino employees' to unionise and demands the company to immediately stop all illegal anti-union activities.
The meeting also appointed four regional co-ordinatorswho would facilitate the development in the regions till the next meeting when the UNI gaming rules on the election of presidents/vice-presidents should be agreed upon. The UNI gaming regional co-ordinators are - Lucas Ramatlhodi (SACCAWU, South Africa) for Africa, Daniel Amoroso (Aleara, Argentina) for Americas, Robert Vijendran Henry (RWEU Malaysia) for Apro and Arto Halonen (PAM, Finland) for Europe.
At the end of the meeting, participants thanked Pieter Heinink, a Co-president of UNI gaming, who was also looking after the sector’s interests during the past year, for his continued support.
