|
UNI americas Equal Opportunities continues to promote the formation of women’s networks in the region. This was the main objective of the meeting of union leaders from different organisations held in Panama City. The Head of UNI Equal Opportunities, colleague Verónica Fernández Méndez, accompanied the Regional Coordinator Briceida González, and together with a group of delegates they held a meeting at the Regional Office in order to create UNI americas Women’s Network in Panama. The Regional Director, colleague José Molina, also attended the meeting, and offered the delegates a kind welcome on behalf of the Regional Secretary. Colleague Molina encouraged the delegates to continue to reinforce women’s role in unions through the work of networks, in order to attract more women and get them involved in union work. With the aim of giving orientation to the delegates in the process of formation of the network, audiovisual material of the different activities carried out by other colleagues from the region was presented, and a video on organisation of networks at the Graphic Sector. Apart from the main objective of the meeting, the programme also considered the treatment of the motions on: Equal Opportunities Department Strategic Plan, Breaking through women’s representation, which will be presented before the Women’s World Conference to be celebrated in November. The enthusiastic colleagues listened and learnt more about the events of Nagasaki and the issues to be treated during that important meeting. At the end of the journey, and after a debate, the present delegates approved the election of colleague Erika Ferrer from SIPANAB as their first Coordinator, and colleague Zobeida Rojas from SINTCAWIPSA as the Minutes Secretary. The delegates agreed to rotate the coordination of the group every six months, and it was established that the woman taking that position will be appointed on their next meeting. Every present delegate expressed deep satisfaction for having taken this step towards the reinforcement of the work of women’s leaders in their organisations and in their work places. It is important to point out that the event had an active participation of young women who are initiated in union work, who actively and enthusiastically participated and are willing this to be the first of several encounters which will show them their way into political-labour work.
