Summary of the steering group meeting 14. - 15. June 2010

At the last UNI Europa Youth Steering Group held in Italy on 14 & 15 June 2010, two days in advance of the UNI Europa Summer School we had lots to discuss and this is a short summary, highlighting some of the topics that were discussed.

Europa Youth Committee Meeting January 2011

The next UNI Europa Youth Committee Meeting will be at the end of January 2011 (venue is not yet decided). At this meeting there will be elections, motions and we will decide the action plan for the next two year period.

Please note that there will be a definite deadline for sending in motions and nominations. Motions and nominations sent after the deadline will not be on the agenda for the meeting. The deadline is 3 months in advance. This will also be further explained when invitations go out.

Statement regarding the attack on the Gaza helping convoys

The steering group has issued a statement regarding the Israeli attack on the convoys bringing help to Gaza. The statement can be read on our website: Click here for the statement

Summer school

There were 28 participants at the summer school. Keith, Colin and some of the members of the steering group stayed for the training to assist.



For the next summer school (2011), we will take special measures in following up the unions that never send participants to the summer school, in order to get them more involved in the UNI Youth work.





Winter School

In 2011 a UNI Europa Youth Winter School will be arranged for the first time. It will be held in Stockholm, Sweden towards the end of February, and will last for three days. Invitations will be sent out to all affiliates in September.

The training is meant for experienced young trade unionists. It will cover subjects such as globalisation, global framework agreements and international trade union work.

The aim of the training is to increase the knowledge about international structures and how to do international trade union work.





UNI and the European Social Forum

Several UNI affiliates are sending young people to attend the European Social Forum in Istanbul. Geert Haverbeke from the Steering Group will also attend the forum, and will give a presentation about UNI and the youth work at one of the forum workshops. There will also be created a facebook event, so that one evening during the forum all young people from UNI affiliates can get together. Please see our Facebook page for more information about this.

Newsletter from the steering group

Some affiliates have asked to have more information about the work in the steering group. Our first step in following up this has been to publish summaries of all meetings to our website, such as the one you are reading now. The next step will be to create a E-Newsletter, that will be sent out on a regular basis. The first newsletter will be sent out after the next meeting, which will be at the end of September.

World Congress in Nagasaki

Despite the fact that all affiliates were encouraged to send young people to attend the UNI World Congress in Nagasaki in November, most unions are not sending young representatives. However, some of the members of the steering group will be going, and they will make sure that UNI Europa Youth are clearly visible.

They will do two things to highlight the work we are doing in UNI Europa Youth. First of all there will be a presentation in the plenary about the youth work, which will consist of pictures and a speech by the President, Keith Pollard. In addition there will be a Youth-stand outside of the conference room all days, where there will be information about UNI Europa Youth, and we will distribute leaflets etc.

In addition to this, Martina Hartung from the steering group will also attend the Women's Committee that takes place a few days before the World Congress.

Due to a misunderstanding the motions from the European committee youth meeting and from the world youth conference in Malaysia has not been forwarded to Nagasaki. This is an issue that we will try our best to solve.

Next UNI Europa Youth Steering Group meeting

The next steering group meeting will be 23-24 of September to prepare the next meeting and also for the UNI World Congress in Japan.
