The APPU Joint Seminar, hosted by the UNI Japan Post with cooperation from the APPC (Asian Pacific Postal College) – a training institute facilitated by the APPU (Asian Pacific Postal Union) – is organized annually by the UNI-Apro Post and Logistics Committee with the objective to train young union officers from postal unions around the world. This year the seminar was held at the APPC in Bangkok between 13-14 of December, 2010. A total of 16 people (of which 5 were women) participated from Hong Kong, Mongolia, Japan (JPGU, Ms. Yoshimi Miyata), Thailand, Malaysia, the Philippines, Vietnam, India, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
At the opening ceremony, Bro. Lim gave the opening remarks on behalf of Bro. Somchai, Director of the APPU Bureau. He stated, “As the relationship between UNI-Apro has strengthened through the signing of a MOU, I wish for all the participants to gain new knowledge and ideas through this seminar, and apply that knowledge at your individual workplaces”. Bro. Eiichi Ito Director of UNI-Apro Post and Logistics highlighted that the APPU Joint Seminar, which has now reached its 11th year, has produced many quality graduates whom are currently active in the frontline as union leaders. He thanked the longstanding cooperation from APPC. Day 1 started with a lecture on the “Organizational Structure of UPU and APPU” and the “General Outline of Global Postal Services” by instructor Bro. Aras, and a lecture on the “Current Conditions and Future Developments of the Changing Postal and Logistics Business” by Bro. Shailendra. Followed by this the participants broke into groups and held discussions on the Postal Business, Logistics Business, and Postal Financial Business. Day 2 Bro. Liu, Regional Project Coordinator of UPU gave a lecture on the Chinese postal reform, and participants were eager to ask questions. Following this on the 15th of December, with additional participants from the Thailand postal union (SEWU-THP), the SEWU-THP joint seminar was held in Kanchanaburi. Bro. Ismaal, President of SEWU-THP, gave the opening remarks at the opening ceremony. Following this Bro. Ito presented a brief overview of UNI and UNI-Apro, and emphasized the need and importance of strengthening the network and information exchange amongst the postal unions in the Asia and Pacific region. Bro. Somboon, adviser of UNI-Apro, gave a report on the history and current issues of the labour movement in Thailand, and there where many questions from overseas participants. In the afternoon, after Bro. Ismaal made remarks on the forming of labour-management social partnership within Thailand Post, overseas participants broke into groups accordingly to their regions and gave brief reports on the postal and logistics services in their respective countries. Although each region and country has their differences, we have also come to find that there were many common issues such as privatisation, decrease in profits, increased competition with major multinational logistics companies, issues on outsourcing and atypical workers and others. Bro. Ito closed the seminar by calling upon the UNI-Apro Post and Logistics affiliates to come together and fight as one in this critical time we are in. |
