Breaking Through! - UNITES Nepal

On 5th March 2011 in Kathmandu (Nepal), the Union of IT and IT Enabled Services Professional Nepal (UNITES Nepal)
organized its first and formal founding conference and youth conference with the presence of more than 150 IT professionals
from different companies all over the country.
The conference aims to:
+ Formally declare the inauguration of UNITES Nepal as a union platform for IT & IT Enabled Service Professionals.
+ Raise awareness of union and its constructive role in IT industry
+ Provide the opportunity for participants to interact with IT professionals; exchange on issues of Youth IT Professionals
and IT Employment Opportunity in Nepal.

Some highlights of the conference:
Brother Christopher Ng, Regional Secretary of UNI Apro extended full support for UNITES Nepal in his congratulation speech,
highlighting that Nepal has huge potential for development of IT and in this context, UNITES’ constructive role will benefit
the IT community, both enterprises and workers, especially in the area of empowerment and skill development.

Mr. Rajan Raj Panta, Controller, Office of Controller of Certification- Government of Nepal shared with the participants
that Nepal government is giving high priority to enabling IT environment in government offices; therefore, government
officers are required to have IT skills at work. He also extended his commitement to support UNITES Nepal for their future activities.
Mr. Kishor Agarawa, General Secretary of Nepal Chamber of Commerce encouraged the participants and young people of
IT professionals to work in a team to create the synergy leading the way for IT development of IT business in Nepal.
With this belief, the Nepal Chamber of Commerce is ready to join hand with UNITES Nepal to create positive changes.

There are two working papers presented in the conference: “Youth in IT and employment” by Mr. Allen Bailochan Tuladhar,
Country Manager of Microsoft Development Partner of Nepal and “Unionism in IT Professionals” by Mr. Prabin Dahal, and
Executive Member of UNITES.
Solidarity messages for members of UNITES Nepal were sent from Mr Kartik Shekhar General Secretary of UNITES India
and Mr. Devraj Dahal Chief of Friedrich Ebert Stiftung- FES, Nepal Office. Expression of support to UNITES Nepal also
came from the Computer Association of Nepal, Nepal Telecom Authority, UNI Nepal liaison council, ISP Association of Nepal,
UNIDOC and TUSSOs – LO FTF Council, SASK Finland and FNV Mondial.

Brother Tilak Jang Khadka, President of UNITES Nepal and brother Saroj Dahal, General Secretary of UNITES Nepal together
with their team have drafted and adopted the following Strategy Plan of UNITES Nepal:
Unionizing of IT professionals through New Generation Network
Career counseling to youth and trainings to support their skills
Advocating and Campaigning for Social security of IT professionals.
Promotion of decent work.
Increasing active participation of youth and their leadership skills in UNITES Leadership
Enhancing cooperation between stakeholders through UNITES
Addressing the grievances of UNITES member and employer through negotiation, mediation and facilitation with meaningful social dialogue.
Fighting for the rights of IT professionals for employment.
Incorporating the role of IT in development of Nepal
