Subject: Message to the President of UNI LC Japan, K. Ochiai
Dear Brother Ochiai,
I am writing to express the shock and the horror of all of the affiliates of UNI around the world at the extraordinary tragedy that has unfolded in Japan following the devastating earthquake and the destructive tsumani which came without warning on Japan last week.
The degree of suffering and destruction that these two natural disasters have brought to large areas of the east coast of Japan is almost impossible to comprehend.
On behalf of all of the affiliates of UNI around the world we wish to express our solidarity with all of the affiliates of UNI in Japan and join with you in prayer at the suffering and death and destruction of property which has occurred to so many people in Japan and particularly to members of our affiliated unions.
We wish to express our sincere condolences to all the families of people in Japan where they have suffered the loss of loved ones.
We also wish to express our desire for a rapid recovery to those who have been injured.
Finally, we are shocked at the level of destruction of property that has occurred and we understand that many people will struggle to restore their homes and their livelihood in the weeks and months ahead.
This has been a shocking natural disaster which comes after other natural disasters of lesser magnitude which have been suffered in New Zealand and in Australia in recent weeks.
We wish to express our solidarity with all the affiliates in Japan at this time of great tragedy and loss.
Yours in solidarity.

Subject: Devastating earthquake and tsunami in Japan
Dear Colleagues,
I know how concerned everyone will be for the health and safety of our members and friends in Japan at this time of national disaster. It was only a short while ago that we were in Japan for the UNI Global Union World Congress. We had a brilliant congress built on the commitment of our affiliates, their members and of course the red jacket volunteers. Everyone in Japan is deeply impacted by the devastating earthquake. I have been in touch with our Tokyo office staff by email since Friday and this morning I spoke with Brother Eiichi Ito, Director of our Tokyo office.
The massive earthquake of a magnitude of 9.0, followed by the tsunami that hit the north eastern and north Kanto region of the Japanese mainland, occurred in the early afternoon of 11 March during working hours. It would appear that the death toll will reach into tens of thousands of people, as towns and villages have been totally destroyed.
Our Tokyo office has been in contact with the UNI Liaison Council Japan. Our unions are working on rescue and recovery initiatives. Most unions have been affected as they have branches in the north east and north Kanto regions. They are trying to gather information on their missing members and their families. This is a very difficult task, as post and telecom facilities have been destroyed, so this will take time. Three members of our Tokyo staff were at the office at the time of the earthquake. Even with the epicentre being some 400 kilometres north east of Tokyo, the tremors still lasted several minutes, shaking high buildings and bringing objects crashing to the ground. It was a terrifying experience for them. Our staff had to stay overnight because all transportation stopped.
This morning, aftershocks are still being felt and not many trains are working due to the serious lack of electricity following the explosions at the nuclear power stations. Tokyo Electric Company announced that there will be rolling power cuts in most cities, except for central Tokyo districts, such as Chiyoda-district, where our office is located. Our staffs are trying to collect as much information as possible from our affiliates and will continue to report on the situation.
We will do all that we can to help our Japanese brothers and sisters in this time of tragedy. Affiliates from around the world have already contacted us, asking how they can help and for news of all the wonderful people they met during our World Congress in Nagasaki in November.
International solidarity is extremely important at this difficult time and I encourage affiliates to send messages to their Japanese colleagues. Please find attached a list of affiliates with ontact details. Kindly send a copy of your message to our Tokyo office at the following address: tokyo@uniglobalunion.org
Our Tokyo office is in consultations with our Japanese affiliates with respect to how UNI and our affiliates can contribute to the recovery effort.
Yours sincerely.

Dear brothers and sisters,
We were very shocked at the news that devastating earthquake and tsunami struck the east coast area of Japan on March 11, 2011 to leave a lot of victims including union officials, members and their families of the UNI Japan.
On behalf of the Korean Financial Industry Union, all the brothers and sisters at KFIU would like to express our deepest condolences and sympathies to the people of Japan, especially in the areas of Fukushima, Iwate and Miyagi where were battered by the disastrous earthquake and nuclear aftermath.

Subject: Korean union’s solidarity for Japanese colleagues on the recent Tsunami
We are so much shocked and saddened by the news of the Tsunami and the nuclear power plants explosion in Japan. From the beginning stage of the news coverage we thoroughly observed the situation through media coverage, but we tried to be patient enough to wait until your situation is rather normalized to take our phone calls and solidarity message.
As the closest neighbour country to you, it is beyond our description how we feel so surprised by the Japanese catastrophe from the earthquake. Today’s letter from Philip Jennings and Ito's response were quite helpful for us to understand the recent situation of Japanese affiliates and colleagues in the Tokyo Office.
We also understand that Japanese finance union colleagues cancelled to participate in the UNI Finance Conference due to the country emergent situation.
Now I am in Lisbon to participate in the UNI Finance Conference this week but I will discuss with our unions in Korea for further step of solidarity at the later stage.
We truly and heartfully hope you recover the pains and destruction in the near future and will extend our utmost solidarity to your colleagues in Japan. In particular we really concerned the side effects of the nuclear power plants explosion for Japan which still suffer the scars from the previous bombs at Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
But we believe that Japanese people will overcome the crisis through the national unity and international solidarity. We still remember your integrity shown in the last Kobe earthquake as well as Nagasaki Congress which all UNI affiliates appreciate your efforts and integrity.
Regards.

Subject: IFJ solidarity with Japanese earthquake and tsunami victims
Dear Akatsuka-san,
I am writing to you on behalf of the International Federation of Journalists, which represents
more than 600,000 workers in 125 countries worldwide, to express our solidarity and support for all our comrades in the Japanese trade union movement and media industry who have been affected by Friday’s devastating earthquake and tsunami.
In times of great crisis we are reminded of the strength of our brothers and sisters and the ability of our movement to overcome great adversity through working together and supporting each other. While the rescue and clean up efforts will be long and arduous for Japan, and the risk posed by explosions at the Fukushima nuclear power plants is of continuing concern, I have no doubt the community will emerge from this disaster stronger, knowing with pride what it can achieve when faced with such great challenges.
Please pass on our sincerest condolences to anyone who has lost friends, family or colleagues as a result of this terrible event, and let us know if there is any way the IFJ and its affiliates can help you in this time of great need.
