53 year-old Néstor Sarante was employed by Fidelis at the factory of Curtiembre Paris SA, a company that makes leather apparels for export. The gate that killed Néstor on Thursday 7 April came off the rail that was holding it, falling on top of the guard and killing him instantly. The danger posed by this gate, and others at the Curtiembre Paris factory, had been identified and raised with the company by workers, however the employer failed to act by replacing the gate.



Nestor is survived by his brother who lived with him and has intellectual disabilities, and was completely dependent on the security guard. There have been no other surviving family members that have been able to be located to date. The Uruguayan Union of Private Security Workers (UNATRASE) held a strike and picket outside the site on Tuesday the 12th of April over the unsafe working practices at the Curtiembre Paris factory. UNATRASE believes that both Curtiembre Paris SA and Fidelis are responsible for providing a safe working environment, and were both negligent in this incident. While security guards are employed at the premises of a separate company, private security companies should ensure that the working conditions provided by clients meet health and safety requirements.
