More than 200 trade unionist from all around Europe met on 9/10 June 2011 under the umbrella of UNI Europa Commerce. The Conference took place in Madrid, at a key moment when the Spanish government is looking to deregulating shop opening hours. The Conference focused its debates on unsocial working hours that cover late/ night/ holidays and Sunday work. Delegates unanimously condemned the attitude of giant retails that put pressure on workers and small businesses. Several employers representatives and A. Cercas, Member of the European Parliament, adressed the conference.



In parallel the conference adopted an action plan that will lead the activities of UNI Europa Commerce for the next 4 years. The action plan focuses on the necessity to a) improve organising of members in commerce b) ensure the inclusion of younger and elder workers on the labour market, c) ensure that employment in commerce is composed by quality jobs based on quality services, d) improve the functioning and networking of European Works Councils.
