At a meeting held on August 29, in Bogotá, a Colombian union delegation headed by UNI Americas’ Regional Secretary, engaged in a constructive dialogue with Mr. Angelino Garzón, Vice President of the Republic of Colombia.



“We must put forth the necessary effort to change the Colombian corporate culture, which sees the unions as their enemies” stated Adriana Rosenzvaig at the meeting held with the Vice President.



Vice President Garzón and his cabinet showed readiness to work on making these cultural and political changes possible. During the meeting there were discussions on jointly holding a Social Dialogue Forum in the Service Economy Sector, inviting companies and unions, and raising burning issues such as respect for human and union rights, and the fight against labor precariousness. Details for this Forum that will take place on November 17 are still being finalized.



UNI Americas also met with the Global Compact Coordinator in Colombia. The liaison counsel of UNI in Colombia will maintain contact with the Coordinator to discuss common issues.



“This is the result of Colombia’s Liaison Counsel’s efforts to overcome differences and set common proposals”, stated the Regional Secretary. She finished by saying “Colombia is a priority for UNI and we will channel all our efforts to enable workers to establish unions without fear for their physical integrity or losing their jobs.
