Over 40 delegates from the GPM Sector of UNITE attended the Sector Conference held in Brighton earlier this week.
Delegates debated a range of motions as well as addresses from the Venezuelan Graphical Union president Egle Sanchez, Nicola Konstantinou from UNI Europa Graphical and Steve Walsh HoD of Uni Global Graphical & Packaging.
The Sector Conferences commenced with a plenary session where the General Secretary of UNITE Len McCluskey spoke about the challenges facing the union and stressed the importance of ensuring that there was a strong turnout for the day of action on the 30th November.
Tony Burke the AGS of Unite who has responsibility for the Manufacturing Industry launched the manufacturing policy and strategy, he spoke about the 10 pillars that the union will be pursuing to ensure that the UK maintains a strong manufacturing base.
Delegates from the various Sectors then adjourned into their own conferences. The GPM Sector Conference was chaired by Raffiq Moosa.
The GPM’s National Officer Steve Sibbald presented the Industrial report and highlighted a number of critical issues which had impacted on the sector. He spoke about the Sector being at the forefront of establishing information and consultation forums.
Motions from Branches were debated and there was a strong emphasis on the importance of organising. The Unions 100% campaign was discussed as well as the importance of the incoming Agency Workers directive.
The GPM Sector Conference also participated in the day of action and attended the rally in Brighton protesting at the decisions of the Tory government to attack public service pensions.
