In a statement Mr Wyckmans said, “The united trade union front (CSC, FGTB, CGSLB) have decided that a general strike is inevitable. A call for action on January the 30^th has been jointly launched.



Consultations with the social partners about the unbalanced coalition agreement got off to a slow start and seem to deliver insufficient results.



In addition the united trade union front fears further austerity measures in the light of the European economic governance policy and the disappointing economic growth policy. These new austerity measures will probably once again target the working people and people receiving social security benefits in addition to those already decided by government.



A general day of strike on January the 30^th is necessary to convince employers and government that this is no longer acceptable for employees and social security recipients.



At the same time the united trade union front is aware of its responsibility and confirms its willingness to pursue the consultations launched at its request.”
