UNI Europa and UNI Global Union joined the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) in an Action Day organised across 27 countries on the eve of the European Summit on March 1^st.

Oliver Roethig, UNI Europa Regional Secretary, is addressing a union rally in Athens, Greece which is at the centre of the Eurozone economic storm. “I am in Athens to stand shoulder to shoulder with our Greek colleagues. Philip Jennings, General Secretary of UNI Global Union said, “We have a clear message for EU leaders – the austerity measures imposed as a reaction to the financial crisis have been an unmitigated disaster. What is needed to get us out of the crisis is a plan for jobs and a new social compact.”

The European Trade Union Action Day is an attack on the austerity measures being imposed by governments which are ripping up the European social model, slashing wages and jobs, destroying public services and social protection as well as launching a war on trade unions.

The day of action is also a warning that the European summit is adopting a treaty which will sink Europe into recession and job insecurity for decades. UNI stands by the ETUC and says enough is enough. Act now for a jobs plan, social justice and solidarity and join the demonstrations.
